allowing them to reach the top of the walls. Another admirable scaffolding, a rolling one, was imagined, in the same era, by Pietro Albertini, the head of the workers, for the restoration of the ornaments and gilts of the great nave of Rome’s St Peter’s Basilica.

Along the centuries, whereas the principles of the scaffolding

remained the same, techniques evolved with the discovery of certain principles of mechanics and physics.
However, some old models were still much used in the 19th century.
In prints testifying of the restoration of the Triumphal Arc, in Paris, in 1872, one can distinguish the pieces of framework constituting the armature of the monument.
Even the first platform of the Eiffel Tower was built thanks to a 57-meter-tall scaffolding, which was made entirely out of wood and of a traditional design. It was not before the end of the 20th century, and often the beginning of the 21st century, that metal, more resistant and less vulnerable in case of blaze, supplanted wood in scaffoldings.
